Finland's Most Versatile Sales Exhibition of Contemporary Art. Artists´ Association MUU and the Union of Artist Photographers organises ART FAIR SUOMI 09, their fifth joint sales exhibition of contemporary art, at the Cable Factory in Helsinki with 150 artists - 600 works of art.

The program includes inspiring presentations by artists and talks about contemporary art and collecting.

Photography Treasure Hunt in Ruoholahti
Place: Ruoholahti neighborhood surronding the Cable Factory, Helsinki

Artists Touko Heikkinen and Ilkka Karhu invite everyone interested in photography to participate in a playful treasure hunt in the Ruoholahti neighborhood. In the immediate surroundings of the Cable Factory photographic works have been placed, for participants to look at, if they manage to find them with the help of a map and hints.

"Wherever you love, you are"

Place: Kamppi Narinkka Square

A photo-performance and itinerant photographic project, which takes place in front of the Kamppi Center in central Helsinki. In an outside photo studio the audience will be able to choose between several backgrounds to project on the inside of a tent and in which they will be able to set their dreams´ portrait. The project is created and realized by Filippo Zambon, student at Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki. The event is a part of the project "Our Game" that celebrates the 30th anniversary of Photographic Gallery Hippolyte.

Pirkko Siitari, Chief Curator, Collections, Museum of Contempory Art Kiasma

Place: Cable Factory

Pirkko Siitari is Chief Curator of Collections at Kiasman in Helsinki. She has worked long with photo-based art: 1990-1999 she was director for Norhtern Photographic centre in Oulu (FI) and 1999-2004 shen was chief exhibition curuator at the Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki (FI). 2004-2008 She worked as director of Kerava Art Museum in Kerava (FI).

Svein Ingvoll Pedersen, Director, Tromsø Kunstforening, Norway

Place: Cable Factory

Svein Ingvoll Pedersen is director and artistic director at Tromsø Kunstforening in Norway. Pedersen is an art historian with a special interest in film and photography, as well as gender and masculinity studies. He has lectured at several Norwegian universities, published articles in magazines and newspapers and has been leading artist run organisations. In Tromsø Kunstforening he has among other things been developing projects grounded in meetings between art and natural science.

Adel Abidin, Artist
Place: Cable Factory

Adel Abidin was born in Baghdad in 1973. Since 2003 then he has been working with videos and video installations. Abidin´s works have been exhibited in several venues and festivals in Finland and abroad. With his fictive travel agency Abidin Travels he represented Finland at the 52nd Venice Biennial in 2007. In his art practice he focuses on issues such as cultural alienation and marginalization. Sarcasm, humor and irony are central to his language.

"Sormina"
Artist Juhani Räisänen
Performance

Place: Cable Factory

Sormina is new musical instrument, created as a doctoral dissertation project by Juhani Räisänen in the University of Art and Design Helsinki, Media Lab. The instrument is a wireless tool to create electronic music and live video from a computer. The design of the hand held interface and all the programming is done by Juhani Räisänen. Wth the project, the interface design and the  audiovisual output have been of equal importance.

The music of Sormina can be described as ambient or environmental, with reminiscences of water drops, wind and other "spacy" sounds. Also melodies can be played. The musician controls the music by turning the small knobs of the interface with his/her fingers. When desired, the finger movements may also control live video processing, which is created by the same software.

AFS09 Seminar: Borders, Borderlands and Interfaces (1st day)

Place: Museum of Contempory Art Kiasma, Theatre

The topic for the two-day seminar is borders, borderlands and interfaces: photogrpahic art as one of the borders of contemporary art; the borderlands of photographic art and journalism; what happens when nature photography meets art pictures or when art pictures engage in dialog with fashin and design imagery. And what does documentarism mean in the fiel of art? One of the topics is also the bordercrossings of nation states and the "national" - the internationalization of contemporary art.

Seminar language: The talks of the morning session on Friday are in English, while the talks on Friday afternoon and on Saturday are in Finnish.
